Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are presently dedicated to science and peace. Even though Turkey signed the Antarctic Treaty in 1995, it has not conducted any scientific study there until today. The First Turkish Antarctic Science Program Road Map Workshop was held on 18-19 November 2013 in Istanbul with the participation of national stakeholders and international experts from various countries to discuss the Turkish initiative for Antarctic research. The present paper summarizes the outcome of this workshop.

The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in progress and its organization

Kentaro Watanabe

National Institute of Polar Research, Research Organization of Information and Systems, 3-10 Midoricho, Tachikawa, Tokyo 190-8518 JAPAN

A brief history, organization, current scientific activities and logistics of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE), Japan’s national Antarctic program, are introduced in relation to international frameworks to some extent. JARE was started on the occasion of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), an international scientific research campaign, planned 1957-1958 for geophysical observation on the globe. The government of Japan decided to participate in IGY with establishment of a Japanese Antarctic station Syowa on East Ongul Island, according to a proposal by the Science Council of Japan and continues JARE until now. Headquarters was established for JARE in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and decides plans for JARE. Operation and logistics of JARE is managed by the National Institute of Polar Research and many research institutions and universities participate in the JARE. The Antarctic Treaty System is a fundamental framework for the Antarctic research expedition and other non-governmental bodies like the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Program are also very important fora for international collaboration on Antarctic science and logistics, respectively.

Antarctica – a critical part of the Earth system

Alan Rodger

Climate Change – Risk and Resilience, 11 Fairway, Girton, Cambridge, CB3 0QF, UNITED KINGDOM

Antarctic is remote from all civilisation but what happens there affects everyone. The paper briefly describes some science research topics of significant global relevance, where Antarctic and the surrounding ocean play a very important role. These include climate change, a sink for carbon dioxide, sea level rise, and the sustainable use of natural resources. Some suggestions are made about areas of Antarctic science that are likely to grow in importance over the next decade. In the future, Antarctic science requires a much more multi-disciplinary approach, scaling up from a local perspective to a continent-wide view and taking full account of the interactions between the Antarctic and the rest of the Earth system. New technologies are making an ever-more important contribution to Antarctic science but some developments are limited by the lack of cost-effective broad-band communications between Antarctica and the rest of the world. Computer models need to continue to be developed and data management requires major investment and coordination to address the key science questions. It is emphasised that international cooperation is essential owing to the scale and complexity of the fundamental science questions combined with the exceptionally-challenging operational conditions.

Turkish harpoon fishery for swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Aegean Sea (Gökçeada Island)

Okan Akyol, Tevfik Ceyhan

Faculty of Fisheries, Ege University, 35440 Urla, Izmir, TURKEY

This study reports the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of swordfish harpoon fishery for the first time in the Turkish Aegean Sea. This research was carried out with commercial harpooners for swordfish in Kaleköy fishing port, Gökçeada Island, a unique harpooning area in Turkish waters during fishing seasons in 2009 and 2010. Catch data (number of specimens and weight of each fish) were recorded on daily basis by both scientific observers and questionnaire with skippers. The effective fishing days at sea were used as a unit of fishing effort. The harpooning data collected during the two seasons (2009-2010) from 21 vessels in Saros Bay showed a total of 20555 kg and 544 specimens. The average CPUEs were 49.7 ± 8.5 kg and 1.3 ± 0.2 in number of fish per day for 2009, and 25.7 ± 12.5 kg and 0.8 ± 0.3 in number of fish per day for 2010. There was no significant difference in the means of swordfish CPUE values both in number and weight between two fishing seasons (2009-2010) (P>0.05).

The abundance and diversity of benthic crustaceans along the coastal zone of Western Libya

Najla M. Abushaala, Taher Shaibi, Hassan M. Howaege

Zoology Department, Faculty of Science, University of Tripoli, P.O.Box: 13793, Tripoli, LIBYA

This study was conducted in the intertidal zone of six rocky-substrate stations on the western Libyan coast: EL-Shajara harbour, Tajura, Ain azargh, Siahia Regata, Sabratha and Tellil, with a sectorial belt of 35-50 m long vertical to the coast and divided into meters, each square meter representing one sample. Samples were collected during September-October 2004 using a 25 × 25 cm quadrate. As for benthic animals recorded in all the stations, a total of 37 crustacean species were recorded, of which 6 were isopods, 23 decapods, 7 amphipods and one species of balanomorphs. The results showed noticeable difference between stations regarding the number of individuals, ranging between 374 and 4769. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in benthic crustaceans except EL-Shajara – Regata and EL-Shajara – Tellil, where there were significant differences in the number of species.

Anionic detergent, LAS pollution in coastal surface water of the Turkish Straits System

Esra Billur Balcıoğlu

Faculty of Fisheries, Istanbul University, Ordu St., No: 200, 34470, Laleli, Istanbul, TURKEY

In this study anionic detergent, LAS concentration was surveyed in the coastal surface water of the Turkish Straits System (TSS) in January and August of 2012. Samples were taken at 15 stations in the TSS, which consists of Straits of Istanbul and Çanakkale and the Sea of Marmara. The mean value of LAS was found for January in the Istanbul Strait as 22.88 μg/L, in the Çanakkale Strait as 24.24 μg/L, in the Sea of Marmara Sea as 26.06 μg/L and for August in the Istanbul Strait as 43.43 μg/L, in the Çanakkale Strait as 48.25 μg/L, in the Sea of Marmara as 42.15 μg/L. The highest pollution was found at Kadıköy and the lowest at Anadolu Feneri for both months. Significant differences were found between seasons (p<0.05).

Institute of Oceanology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 40 Parvi Mai str., P.O. Box 152, Varna, 9000, BULGARIA

This study was conducted to determine length-weight relationship of horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus (Aleev, 1956) from Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Length and weight of fish were measured during May-December 2009, then converted into logarithmic values. The coefficient of determination (r2) of different samples showed high degree of correlation between legth and weight, 0.8571, 0.9716, and 0.9994 for female, male and both sexes, respectively.

The blenny Parablennius thysanius is recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. The specimen was collected by scraping the mooring bouys at the Great Harbour of Antalya, Turkey. The source of the Mediterranean specimen could be fouling or ballast water or even from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migrant).

Five biometric parameters (shell height, shell length, nacreous height, nacreous width and hinge length) were measured for two populations of Pinctada radiata (Leach, 1814) within shallow coastal waters of the Maltese Islands, in the central Mediterranean Sea, as part of a demographic study of the species. In terms of shell height, both populations consisted mainly of small to moderate individuals. Regression analyses between these parameters were carried out, resulting in moderate to high correlations between all parameters except for hinge length. The study represents the first attempt at morphometric characterization of populations of a non-indigenous bivalve in Maltese coastal waters.
