Abstract

Length-weight relationships were estimated for three elasmobranch species from the Sea of Marmara. Specimens were collected by beam trawl between September 2011 and July 2014. A total of 192 individuals (130 Raja clavata, 45 Scyliorhinus canicula, 17 Torpedo marmorata) were examined. Results indicated that R. clavata and S. canicula have positive allometric growth and T. marmorata has negative allometric growth. Due to the lack of data on length-weight relationships of elasmobranch species in the Sea of Marmara, these results contribute to our knowledge of this species.

Abstract

In this paper, the research made on the factors which influence the determination of LAS in sea water by MBAS and HPLC methods was summarized. These factors are purity of LAB and LAS, degradation, light, storage time, salinity and methods used for analysis. These factors were discussed and a modification on the MBAS method was proposed.

Abstract

Chondrichthyan or cartilaginous species, throughout the world, are found among fisheries by-catch. In this study, 52 studies conducted between 1991 and 2018 in Turkish waters were reviewed to assess the status of chondrichthyan species as by-catch. Geographic coverage was grouped as; Black Sea (the number of studies 5), Sea of Marmara (6), Aegean Sea (25), and Levantine Sea (16). Results showed that there were differences in by-catch amounts when sharks, rays and chimaeras were compared according to geographical grouping. When by-catch ratios of listed species were analyzed it showed that almost half of the by-catch was comprised of small spotted catshark, Scyliorhinus canicula (Linnaeus, 1758), followed by blackmouth catshark, Galeus melastomus Rafinesque, 1810. In case of rays, the most common species of by-catch was thornback ray, Raja clavata Linnaeus, 1758, followed by common stingray, Dasyatis pastinaca (Linnaeus, 1758). Among all reported species concerned, 9 were Critically Endangered, 8 Endangered, 7 Vulnerable, 13 Near Threatened, 8 Least concern, 9 were Data Deficient, according to IUCN Red List, corresponding to half of the Turkish cartilaginous fauna. This review aims to provide on the by-catch of cartilaginous species caused by scientific or commercial fisheries activities in the Turkish waters emphasizing on long-needed conservation action plans for future sustainability of these cartilaginous species.

Abstract

This study reports a third maximum length record for bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766) for the Turkish water. The P. saltatrix specimen was captured in the Biga Peninsula in the southwestern Sea of Marmara. Its length was 73.4 cm and weight was 3600 g. The age was determined by the otolith as 6 years old. This is the first study to examine otolith of such a large specimen in Turkey.

Abstract

A specimen of imperial blackfish Schedophilus ovalis was caught on 15 April 2018 from the Gülbahce coasts, Izmir Bay at a depth of 8 m. This ichthyologic note presents the first confirmed record of imperial blackfish from the shallow waters of Izmir Bay, NE Aegean Sea and the third for the Turkish waters.

Abstract

Capture of a single individual of Lagocephalus sceleratus from Türkeli shore (Sinop, Turkey) by an artisanal fisherman appeared in a local newspaper on December 2017, which represents the second occurrence record of the species from the Black Sea. Due to its highly invasive character, urgent and tangible measures (i.e. eradication) are needed to be taken both by Turkey and the neighboring countries.

Abstract

The present study reports the capture and recording of an individual of the tripletail fish Lobotes surinamensis in Esquerquis Bank (northern Tunisia) in February 2017. In Tunisia, it is the first record of the Herculian species in northern deep waters (around 200 meters) after the latest observation of L. surinamensis in 2015 from the coastal water. These reports of the Herculean species, chronologically closer together, lead us to believe that the species was established in the Tunisian waters.

Abstract

We report the presence of the invasive amphipod Caprella scaura Templeton 1836 in the Bizerte Lagoon (North of Tunisia) in November 2017. This lagoon is approximately 100 km north from the Tunis Lagoon where the presence of C. scaura was previously recorded in 2014. This new species record is considered as the most northern in the southern Mediterranean. This invasive species was found attached to Cymodocea nodoa leaves, and the presence of adult male and gravid female specimens provides the evidence of a viable population in the site. This study showed that fouling has a positive impact on the settlement success of invasive species. We hypothesize that C. scaura was probably introduced to the Bizerte Lagoon through the fouling community on shellfish farms. We suggest that Bizerte Channel, used as commercial and fishing navigation, is an interesting area for future monitoring studies.

Abstract

A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the Pelargonium sidoides extract on the haematological profile of common carp, Cyprinus carpio. The fish (mean body weight 0.67±0.05 g) were fed with experimental diets prepared by using the supplementation of P. sidoides extract (0, 1, 3 and 5 ml 100 g-1) for 90 days. The highest hemoglobin concentration was registered in 3 ml 100 g-1 P. sidoides extract-supplemented diet (10.50±0.45 g l-1) and 5 ml 100 g-1 P. sidoides extract-supplemented diet (11.02±0.20 g l-1). Among the P. sidoides extract-supplemented groups, the highest white blood cell values were also found in 5 ml 100 g-1 P. sidoides extract-supplemented diet (28.98±1.62 G l-1). The highest values of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (P < 0.05) were detected in 5 ml 100 g-1 P. sidoides extract-supplemented diet. Red blood cell, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin levels were not affected by any of the experimental diets (P>0.05). The results of the present work have demonstrated that P. sidoides extract-based diet affect basic haematological profile of common carp.

Abstract

The paper summarizes original studies of species composition and quantitative data (abundance and biomass) of microphytobenthos diatoms of the different ecotopes of some protected areas of the Black and Azov ecosystems of the Crimean shallow waters (1987-2017). In total, 251 taxa were detected, which include benthic (194), benthoplanktonic (40) and planktonic (17) ones. 21 harmful species were identified, 18 of them causing the algal bloom. From all benthic and benthoplanktonic species, 75 taxa were in both seas, 221 taxa were found in the Black Sea and 92 ones were identificated in the Sea of Azov. These species belong to the three classes of Coscinodiscophyceae (18), Fragilariophyceae (35) and Bacillariophyceae (181) and represent 24 orders, 42 families and 71 genera. Marine (49.5% and brackish-marine (27.0%) species prevail, 64 taxa are indicators of organic pollution of water. The group of saprobiont species (64.0%), which is a typical for mesotrophic waters, i.e. those with moderate organic pollution, dominated. The phytogeographical elements of the diatom flora are identified as cosmopolitan (25.0%), boreal-tropical (25%), boreal (22%), arctical-boreal-tropical (19%), and arctical-boreal (9%) species. For the first time quantitative data of diatoms are presented. Comparative qualitative and quantitative data of benthic communities are discussed.
