Abstract

Based on the external morphology of three beaked whales stranded on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey during multiple strandings in June 2016, the authors misidentified them as Mesoplodon mirus in their preliminary identification paper. However, the genetic analysis, which was mentioned in the paper as “strongly needed for the confirmation of this species identification”, with sequencing of partial fragments of the mtDNA COI gene and the first intron of the nuclear muscle actin gene, indicates that these specimens belong to Ziphius cavirostris Cuvier, 1823. We deeply apologise to readers for confusion this preliminary paper has created.
