Abstract

Two individuals of a rare fish species, Gaidropsarus granti, were collected in 1991 in the central Mediterranean Sea at 450 m depth. This species is considered typical of seamounts and deep-coral habitats, although it has been occasionally collected on soft bottoms. The insufficient records do not allow to ascertain its biogeographical status, and it is generally considered as a cryptogenic species. The present finding should be considered chronologically the third record of G. granti from the Mediterranean.

Abstract

Between 1973 and 2023, a total of 63 species had been protected in Turkish marine areas according to national legislation 1380 (Official Notice for Regulating Commercial Fisheries of Water Resources, No. 5/1). Notably, sturgeon species were at the forefront of these conservation efforts, with initiatives beginning in 1976 and continuing to the present day. Among marine flora, only two species (Posidonia oceanica and Zostera noltii) were granted protected status, while the other species were not accorded such protection. The protected fauna included 13 marine mammal species and 22 species of sharks and rays, the latter representing the most extensively protected category. In addition, three species of sea turtles, seven species of corals, six species of mollusks, one species of crustaceans, and three species of fish are also under protection. Comprehensive details regarding the years when these species were protected, the rationale behind their protection, their IUCN Red List statuses, and the institutions advocating for their protection are summarized. Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV) has been the main driver for the protection of sharks and rays, corals, and mollusks, successfully placing 18 species under protection in recet years. The first coralligenous species to be protected was the black coral Savalia savaglia, while the first size limitation was established for Huso huso, and the first protected species was the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus).

Abstract

This study reports an observed case of infanticidal behaviour and a possible case of infanticide in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Marmara Sea. This behaviour was observed between an adult of unknown sex, referred to as the ‘aggressor,’ and a carcass of a male neonate, referred to as the ‘target.’ The videos were recorded on 10 August 2024, by an amateur diver from an inflatable boat, near Kınalıada, located in the northeastern part of the Marmara Sea. This report is the first observed case of a possible infanticide in bottlenose dolphins in the Marmara Sea.

Abstract

Posidonia oceanica is an endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea, but recently it is actually exposed to anthropogenic pressures by numerous activities of various origins (coastal developments, trawling, anchoring, turbidity, erosion and beach nourishment). The aim of this study is to evaluate the ecological status of P. oceanica meadows around Rachgoun Island of Algerian west coast. The entire island is protected according to the Ramsar Convention and a marine protected area in the process of being classified. The ecological study revealed that the density values reveal a dense to sparse meadow, and the cover rates are among similar values on the Algerian coasts, between 70 % and 88.32%. The analysis carried out on structural features shows that these parameters are strongly influenced by multiple factors (depth, hydrodynamics and anthropogenic actions). The biometric parameters and phenological study (length and width of leaves, leaf surface, coefficient A and leaf area index) of P. oceanica show that the Rachgoun Island meadows are, globally, in good health status.

Abstract

The first observation of epimeletic behaviour of a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was reported from the Marmara Sea, Türkiye. This behaviour was observed between an adult ‘caregiver’ of undetermined sex and a dead individual identified as an adult male based on images captured during the observation. The former individual did not leave the dead one’s side for at least six days between 26 and 31 March 2024 over the distance of 7 km between Zeytinburnu and Yeşilköy, close to the south entrance of the İstanbul Strait in the Marmara Sea. When approached by a boat, the dolphin was seen to push the dead one away from the boat by attaching its dorsal fin to the dead one’s fins or pushing with its head. Only 7 of the 96 recorded cases were among subadults or adults cetaceans in world oceans, and only two of these did not show sexual behaviour as in this case. This first and rare observation is a significant addition to our understanding of the behaviour of cetaceans in this region.

Abstract

This short communication reports an observation of a leatherback turtle Dermochelys coriacea in the İstanbul Strait (Bosphorus), Marmara Sea, on 9 July 2024. Leatherback turtles are occasionally reported in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas of Türkiye. This is the northernmost record of the leatherback turtle in the Mediterranean Basin. As the importance of citizen science becomes more apparent and public awareness grows, access to observational information such as this will increase through digital technologies.

Abstract

This study presents five new records of diatoms based on light and electron microscopy results from the surface water of the Sea of Marmara coast during a large-scale mucilage event in 2021. Three of these diatoms are small nanoplanktic; Cyclotella cryptica, Nitzschia amabilis, Thalassiosira pseudonana, and the two of them are larger diatoms; Conticribra weissflogii and Entomoneis cf. pusilla. In addition, a species frequently seen in mucilage samples in the Adriatic Sea and the the Sea of Marmara, Cylindrotheca closterium, was also isolated and described. The chloroplast rbcL region, SSU, and 18S rDNA of C. closterium, C. cryptica and N. amabilis were amplified using primers in other previous studies. The rbcL, SSU, and 18S rDNA partial sequences were submitted to the NCBI database. Molecular phylogeny (based on 18S, rbcL, and SSU V4 DNA sequences) confirmed that the analysed species were those identified by SEM images.

Abstract

In this study, the spatial distribution of alkylphenols in the sediments of the Marmara Sea was investigated for the first time. The targeted alkylphenol analysis was made by gas chromatography with triple quadrupole (GC-MS/MS) system. The 4-tert-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol were detected in the studied sediments, while 4-n-octylphenol was not quantified. The measured concentrations of 4-tert-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol were in the range of <DL (below detection limit) – 35.24 and <DL – 8.45 ng/g DW (Dry Weight), respectively. Elevated alkylphenol concentrations were found in the sediments of Kumport and open sea area of the Marmara Sea. The detected 4-tert-octylphenol found in this region, therefore, indicates that alkylphenol contamination may reach far from the coast or maritime activities may be a cause. Based on the classification of the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (NCPA), some sampling points are in class IV, which means that the sediment thus is posing a high risk for benthic organisms. The risk quotients (RQs) for the sediments investigated also showed that the concentration of 4-tert-octylphenol poses a serious risk.

Abstract

High-resolution swath-bathymetric data were collected via multibeam sonar in Lystad Bay (Horseshoe Island, Antarctica). From 3D high-resolution data, important shallows that pose a danger to sailors have been identified. Successive depressions on the crystalline/volcanic bedrock (active lakes), elongated-streamline glacial landforms and glacial landforms with distinctive shapes in this subglacial margin were recognized, and how they may have developed was explained. Limited oceanographic data support that suspended material transport may also be effective in sediment accumulation. Suggestions have been made for geological and geophysical studies that are expected to be carried out in the future.
