Abstract

The first observation of epimeletic behaviour of a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was reported from the Marmara Sea, Türkiye. This behaviour was observed between an adult ‘caregiver’ of undetermined sex and a dead individual identified as an adult male based on images captured during the observation. The former individual did not leave the dead one’s side for at least six days between 26 and 31 March 2024 over the distance of 7 km between Zeytinburnu and Yeşilköy, close to the south entrance of the İstanbul Strait in the Marmara Sea. When approached by a boat, the dolphin was seen to push the dead one away from the boat by attaching its dorsal fin to the dead one’s fins or pushing with its head. Only 7 of the 96 recorded cases were among subadults or adults cetaceans in world oceans, and only two of these did not show sexual behaviour as in this case. This first and rare observation is a significant addition to our understanding of the behaviour of cetaceans in this region.

Abstract

This short communication reports an observation of a leatherback turtle Dermochelys coriacea in the İstanbul Strait (Bosphorus), Marmara Sea, on 9 July 2024. Leatherback turtles are occasionally reported in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas of Türkiye. This is the northernmost record of the leatherback turtle in the Mediterranean Basin. As the importance of citizen science becomes more apparent and public awareness grows, access to observational information such as this will increase through digital technologies.

Abstract

This study presents five new records of diatoms based on light and electron microscopy results from the surface water of the Sea of Marmara coast during a large-scale mucilage event in 2021. Three of these diatoms are small nanoplanktic; Cyclotella cryptica, Nitzschia amabilis, Thalassiosira pseudonana, and the two of them are larger diatoms; Conticribra weissflogii and Entomoneis cf. pusilla. In addition, a species frequently seen in mucilage samples in the Adriatic Sea and the the Sea of Marmara, Cylindrotheca closterium, was also isolated and described. The chloroplast rbcL region, SSU, and 18S rDNA of C. closterium, C. cryptica and N. amabilis were amplified using primers in other previous studies. The rbcL, SSU, and 18S rDNA partial sequences were submitted to the NCBI database. Molecular phylogeny (based on 18S, rbcL, and SSU V4 DNA sequences) confirmed that the analysed species were those identified by SEM images.

Abstract

In this study, the spatial distribution of alkylphenols in the sediments of the Marmara Sea was investigated for the first time. The targeted alkylphenol analysis was made by gas chromatography with triple quadrupole (GC-MS/MS) system. The 4-tert-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol were detected in the studied sediments, while 4-n-octylphenol was not quantified. The measured concentrations of 4-tert-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol were in the range of <DL (below detection limit) – 35.24 and <DL – 8.45 ng/g DW (Dry Weight), respectively. Elevated alkylphenol concentrations were found in the sediments of Kumport and open sea area of the Marmara Sea. The detected 4-tert-octylphenol found in this region, therefore, indicates that alkylphenol contamination may reach far from the coast or maritime activities may be a cause. Based on the classification of the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (NCPA), some sampling points are in class IV, which means that the sediment thus is posing a high risk for benthic organisms. The risk quotients (RQs) for the sediments investigated also showed that the concentration of 4-tert-octylphenol poses a serious risk.

Abstract

High-resolution swath-bathymetric data were collected via multibeam sonar in Lystad Bay (Horseshoe Island, Antarctica). From 3D high-resolution data, important shallows that pose a danger to sailors have been identified. Successive depressions on the crystalline/volcanic bedrock (active lakes), elongated-streamline glacial landforms and glacial landforms with distinctive shapes in this subglacial margin were recognized, and how they may have developed was explained. Limited oceanographic data support that suspended material transport may also be effective in sediment accumulation. Suggestions have been made for geological and geophysical studies that are expected to be carried out in the future.

Abstract

A total of thirty-one adult individuals and four embryos of Torpedo marmorata Risso, 1810 were caught as bycatch with trammel nets by commercial fishermen in the southwestern Sea of Marmara, Türkiye. The length-weight relationships (LWRs), length-length relationships and some biological properties of the individuals were investigated. The LWRs for males, females, and all sexes were estimated as TW=0.0152TL3.0437, TW=0.0129TL3.1029 and TW=0.0124TL3.1122 (TW: Total weight, TL: Total length), respectively. The growth type was identified as isometric for males, females, and all sexes. According to morphometric measurements, only difference was between total length and disc length ratios of female and male individuals. The minimum, maximum and mean condition factors were estimated for adults as 1.493, 2.179 and 1.801±0.03, respectively. These results increase the knowledge on T. marmorata stocks distributed in the Sea of Marmara and expected to contribute for future studies on the species.
