Abstract

Between 1994 and 2012, 43 sightings of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were reported in the Turkish part of the Aegean and Mediterranean Sea. Most of the sightings were located near the Fethiye Canyon which is one of the deepest parts of the Mediterranean Sea. The eastern limit of the sperm whale sighting in the Turkish part of the Mediterranean Sea is Alanya and the northern limit is Gökçeada in the northern Aegean Sea.

Abstract

The annual density fluctuations of the polychaete Protodrilus flavocapitatus (Uljanin, 1877) was investigated in the Crimean coastal zone. The maximum density of polychaete was recorded in December (472 ind.m˗2) and the minimum in July (13 ind.m˗2). In addition, an experiment regarding its asexual reproduction strategy was conducted. Females with eggs were recorded from April to June. It was found that this species can regenerate missed body fragments and the regeneration of the distal end began in the second day.

Abstract

This paper reports 242 taxa at species and infraspecies level of the benthic marine algae (75 Phaeophyceae, 129 Rhodophyta, and 38 Chlorophyta) from Northern Cyprus. Among them, 107 taxa are recorded for the first time from the coast of Northern Cyprus. Sampling was made at seven different localities (Yeşilırmak, Koruçam, Girne, Dip Karpaz, Kumyalı, Salamis, and Gazi Mağusa) in North Cyprus in 2005˗2008.

Abstract

A specimen of the Tub gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucerna, with 735 mm TL, was caught on 2 January 2013 by an angler on a boat in Sığacık Bay, Southern Aegean Sea. The given size is the second maximum length record of C. lucerna, however, it is a first confirmed record for the Turkish seas.

Abstract

A single individual of fin whale, Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758) was recorded on 17 December 2011 in Kotor Bay (southeastern Adriatic Sea). The depth was between 5 and 7 meters. The specimen was about 10 meters long and this paper reports the first occurrence of the fin whale in very shallow waters in the most inner part of Boka Kotorska Bay.

Abstract

A stranding of a Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) was reported for the first time in the Marmara Sea, Turkey. A piece of rope tied around its tail fluke can be the evidence of bycatch. The occurrence of the Risso’s dolphin, dead or alive, was never reported before in the Marmara Sea.

A STUDY ON THE GROWTH OF HORSE MACKEREL (TRACHURUS MEDITERRANEUS ALEEV, 1956) FROM BULGARIAN WATERS OF THE BLACK SEA USING LENGTH FREQUENCY ANALYSIS

Abstract

Length frequency data of horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus ponticus were collected from commercial net catch from Bulgarian Black Sea waters. Sampling covered the fishing season from May to December in 2012. FISAT II software program was used to analyze its length frequency distribution. The corresponding values of asymptotic length L∞ using ELEFAN I ranged from 18.11 and 19.26 cm, K values were 0.51 year-1 and 0.44 year-1 , for males and females, respectively. L estimated by Bhattacharya and Ford-Walford method ranged from 18.90 and 19.11 cm for males and females, respectively. Meanwhile,L by Wetherall and Bertalanffy method shows 18.24 and 18.78 cm for males and females, respectively. The instantaneous rate of total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were estimated and accordingly the exploitation ratio was determined. The Z estimated by length cohort analysis ranged from 1.42 for females and 1.62 for males. The Beverton relative yield per recruit model analysis showed that EMSY, the maximum (Y’/R), was obtained at nearly the same value for females =(0.37) and males (0.38).

Abstract

A total of 636 specimens of the greater weever, Trachinus draco, was collected monthly by bottom trawlers in the Eastern Black Sea. In order to identify some biological features of this species in the Black Sea, reproductive characteristics and growth parameters such as sex ratio, maturity stage, length at first maturity, spawning time, reproduction period, age, length-weight relationship, and condition factor were recorded. The female:male ratio was 1:1.04 (x2 : 0.27, x2 0.05,1=3.84; P>0.05). Mean condition factors of females and males were 0.99055 and 0.95625, respectively. Taking into consideration of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and egg diameter, reproduction occurred in July and August. The age at first maturity was 1year and the first reproduction length was 12.01 cm for females. The average diameter of mature egg was 0.91 ± 0.265 mm. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation were for females and males as follows: L∞ = 32.62 cm, K = 0.18 y-1, to = −1.74 year, and W∞ = 232.54 g, and L∞ = 29.31 cm, K = 0.17 y-1, to = −2.28 year, and W∞ = 232.54 g, respectively. The growth performance index (Ф) was 2.29, 2.17 and 2.36 for females, males and all specimens, respectively. The maximum age was 6 years for females and 5 years for males.

ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL (ZN, PB, FE) CONTAMINATION IN SURFACE SEDIMENTS OF CREEKS FLOWING TO INNER PART OF IZMIR BAY (EASTERN AEGEAN SEA)

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the new environmental situation following the waste water treatment facility built in 2000 by determining Zn, Pb and Fe concentrations of samples obtained in 2007-2008 from surface sediments of seven creeks flowing into Izmir Bay. Zn concentrations ranged between 5.25-928.76 mg/kg, Pb between ND-265.92 mg/kg and Fe between 22700-141770 mg/kg. Enrichment factor (EF) values show that Zn and Pb mainly originated from anthropogenic sources. While average contamination factor (CF) values displayed a change from moderate contamination to considerable contamination for Zn, contamination level varied between considerable and high in terms of Pb. As Fe is an element originating from the natural structure of the earth, low-moderate contamination levels were detected in the sediments. Although the waste water treatment facility of the municipality started to operate partially in 2000 and in full capacity in 2002, the result of this study revealed the outstanding fact that high amounts of heavy metals were still found in the creeks which should have only included rain water in 2007-2008 when this study was conducted.
